Anybody mentioned True Grit and Appaloosa here??

Funny thing about True Grit, I prefer the Coen Brothers version to the Hathaway version with Wayne. I thought the Coens were too smart alecky and their sensibilities too modern to pull off a straight Western but they did it.

Delmer Daves was a director who made some excellent westerns back in the 50s including the original 3:10 to Yuma, Cowboy, Broken Arrow and Drum Beat (the only movie I know of on the Modoc War, with Charles Bronson as Captain Jack). He also made one of my favorite wide screen spectacles, Demetrius and the Gladiators.

I liked the ending and main heroine better in the Coen Brothers version. Though old film had Robert Duvall as a main bad guy.
