Beside individual , government , private companies own plant or military generator the first power plant for commercial use was in 1882 in Shanghai and 1889 in Hong Kong
electric tramways were a big user , there was a vibrant market of charging batteries for people with radios , the empty batteries would be deposed and then collected charged

electric lighting took a while to replace gas lighting , the light bulbs were not that reliable and kerosene lamps were often used in individual home

When did Edison became a big name in East Asia? For example the Japanese people voted him the greatest non-Japanese person of all time in 2006.

Was he known in China or Japan during his lifetime?

Probably , China was getting good reporting of world events especially on technical progress
the North china Daily news was published in 1850 , missionary societies had their own papers in Chinese so did Hong Kong
Shanghai had the the Shenbao, established in 1872
chines were thirsty for information ,it was seen as subverting the Qing dynasty attempt to control information

Edison was a pretty famous person worldwide ,
his meeting in 1889 on the private room at the top of the Eiffel tower with Eiffel himself was reported as the meeting of the giants of the time

In 1882, Shanghai had been a treaty port for forty years already. British, American, and French influence was high. I don't know if the light bulb was introduced to China by Chinese or if by foreigners.
