Which people or groups had a realistic chance of seizing power and committing great evils afterwards but failed to actually seize power?

The battle of Waterloo had quite some casualties, not to mention that quite probably Europe would see another string of wars if he had kept his position.
He wouldn't have been brutal to his own population with the exception of possibly drafting them, though.

There are no left wing parties in the US. There are some left leaning individuals like Sanders. The problem is perspective. If you stand in a room with your shoulder hard against the right wall, then everyone else is going to be on your left, even those who are also standing on the right

The US political "center" has been pushed so far to the right that any attempt to bring it back to the real center seems like a radical left wing conspiracy.

On social and cultural issues, the Democratic Party is as far to the left as any openly socialist party in Europe or Australia.

There are no openly socialist parties in mainstream politics in Australia. The three major parties - Liberal, National, and Labor are all right wing. The Greens are as far left as it gets in Australia and most of their policies rely on economic capitalism, not socialism.

This is pure speculation. When he returned he announced his system has changed and that there will be no more wars but considering that it is Napoleon we shouldn't trust him too much.

He would conscript people...in a total war? No way! How dare he, it's not like it's natural and logical that he and everyone else would do that.

At the risk of derailing the thread into current politics I would like to comment that the definitions of liberal and conservative in the US are mixed up entirely. For instance you are considered liberal if you want more government intervention in economics and conservative if you want a small government that doesn't intervene.
