Which people or groups had a realistic chance of seizing power and committing great evils afterwards but failed to actually seize power?

While I am no expert on Australian politics, I would presume that if Labor is anything like the British Labor Party it is left of center on cultural issues.
It was Labor who banished all irregular immigrants and asylum seekers to internment camps on Nauru and New Guinea. It was Labor who started privatising national assets like the Commonwealth Bank and Insurance companies. It was Labor who began the dismantling of the union movement and curtailing their power. It was Labor who reintroduced university fees.
