I'm thinking that must be difference. Impressed men from British vessels or seaports were essentially conscripts and were paid. Sailors taken off American vessels were treated as deserters and forced to work without pay.

The most prominent and significant example of white slavery in American textbooks that I've read is the slave trade engaged in by the Barbary pirates. It was an early example of radical jihadist ideology that justified violence against and conquering of infidels, especially Christians. "The Catholic kings," Ferdinand and Isabel of Spain, expelled millions of Moslems from the Iberian peninsula in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. These displaced people naturally went to their cultural cousins in North Africa, feeding into the piracy trade and adding to it a fierce desire for revenge against the southern Europeans. Spain lost thousands upon thousands of its citizens to the Barbary pirates and slave trade, as did Italy, even into the nineteenth century. [Details taken from Jefferson's War by Joseph Wheelan]

The following is a poem about a slave raid on a town in County Cork in 1631. The city in Maryland is named for the hereditary governors of Maryland who were Lords Baltimore in the Irish parliament.

"The summer sun is falling soft on Carbery's hundred isles.
The summer sun is gleaming still through Gabriel's rough defiles.
Old innisherkin's crumbled fane looks like a moulting bird,
And in a calm and sleepy swell the ocean tide is heard.
The hookers lie upon the beach; the children cease their play,
The gossips leave the little inn and the household kneels to pray,
And full of love and peace and rest - its daily labour o'er -
Upon that cosy creek there lay the town of Baltimore.

A deeper rest, a starry trance has come with midnight there,
No sound except the throbbing wave in earth or sea or air.
The massive capes and ruined towers, seemed conscious of the calm,
The fibrous sod and stunted trees are breathing heavy balm.
So still the night, these two long barques round Dun na Sead that glide,
Must thrust their oars - methinks not few - against the ebbing tide.
Oh! some sweet mission of true love must urge the shore
They bring some lover to his bride, who sighs in Baltimore.

All, all asleep within each roof along that rocky street,
And these must be the lovers friends with gentle gliding feet.
A stifled gasp! A dreamy noise! "The roof is in aflame!"
From out their beds and to their doors rush maid and sire and dame,
And meet upon the threshold stone the gleaming sabres fall,
And o'er each black and bearded face a white or crimson shawl
The yell of "Allah" breaks above the prayer, and shriek, and roar,
Oh! Blessed God! The Algerine is Lord of Baltimore.
The yell of "Allah" breaks above the prayer, and shriek, and roar,
Oh! Blessed God! The Algerine is Lord of Baltimore.

Mid summer morn in woodland nigh the birds begin to sing.
They see not now the milking maids - deserting is the spring,
Mid summer day - this gallant rides from distant Bandon town.
The hookers crossed from stormy Schull, that skiff from Affadown.
They only found the smoking walls, with neighbour's blood besprint
And on the strewed and trampled beach awhile they wildly went
Then dashed to sea and passed Cape Clear and saw five leagues before
The pirate galleys vanished, that ravished Baltimore.

Oh! Some must tug the galleys oar and some must tend the steed.
This boy will bear a sheik's chibouk; and that a bey's jeered.
Oh! some are for the arsenals by beauteous Dardenelles.
And some are in the caravans to Mecca's sandy dells.
The maid that Bandon gallant sought is chosen for the Dey.
She's safe - he is dead - she stabbed him in the midst of his serai.
And when to die a death of fire, that noble maid they bore,
She only smiled - O'Driscoll's child; she thought of Baltimore."

Did you know that Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra who wrote Don Quixote was a slave in North Africa for a time?

An excellent book about Baltimore.
Interestingly its possible that the attack was arranged by local Irish catholic lords to 'return' land 'unjustly stolen' from them by Welsh and English protestants who were most of these taken in the raid.

Native Americans would apparently keep white slaves - not in the same form as the European chattel slavery - in tradition of keeping war captives as slaves. Prior to European colonization, their slaves would be captives from other tribes - after colonization, this would include whites as well. I had a great, great (and so on and so on) grandfather who was at Lochry's Massacre, who was fortunately spared and kept as a slave by the Native Americans for a time. Apparently it was common... though often they held them until they could be ransomed by family or some interested party - sometimes almost integrating them into the tribe to replace members lost in battles... (so permanently keeping them "enslaved", though that Stockholm syndrome-y, "part of the family" mentality makes it seem more okay somehow.) When you read about Hannah Duston, she met other white captives who helped her kill off the family (children, too!) of natives that held her...

The major expulsion of the Muslims was already in the beginning of the 17th century, under Filipe II, long after the Catholic kings (Expulsion of the Moriscos - Wikipedia) and helped to aggravate the economic crisis in which some areas in Spain were already falling.

The Muslim raids against the ships and coasts of Europe for slaves went until the 19th century. Curiously the Christians made the same until the 16th century, when the price and availability of black slaves turned those raids unprofitable.

Thanks for that. I'd forgotten that practice. Shouldn't have, considering some Hollywood movies and the odd clip on Youtube

Slavery was the labour saving technology of the day.
Whites took native slaves, natives took white slaves.
White europeans took each other as slaves to row galleys.
North Africans took southern europeans etc
Its just how the world worked, some people got unlucky and ended up as slaves. That ws the justification for slavery for a long time, it was just what happened if you got unlucky, this time it was them, next time it could be you!

Then Europe started to accelerate technologically in ships, weapons, naviagtion, science and what had been a few unlucky people turned into an accelerating tidal wave that took over every facet of finance.
