Doesn't make Lincoln not divisive. He was the President during whose mandate half of the country seceded.
You really do not have a case if you're blaming a President for anything which happens during his tenure.

By that logic FDR caused WW2 and Jimmy Carter caused the Iranian Revolution!

The division between the North and the South certainly existed, but it was Lincoln's election that made that division much, much more real and bloody.
Yes, but did Lincoln do anything to increase the division or did people act on the assumption that he would? Can we blame Lincoln for seven states seceding before he was even inaugurated?

He was not to blame, but he was still divisive and that is the topic of this thread.

I think some of us are moving beyond merely that he was divisive and are moving into why he was divisive. And it's OK to go beyond the initial boundaries of the thread. It's natural for the answer to one question to raise more questions.

Well, as I said, he was divisive because he was the first Republican President. The South saw him as a threat and seceded.

The South had been waving the threat of division well before Lincoln was even talked about ,

Until Obama, Lincoln would have been a shoo-in. After all, a Civil War is as divided as a nation gets.
Doesn't truly matter: with racists and socialists such as Julian Castro, Bernie Sanders, Pocahontas, etc. running, the worst is clearly yet to come.

Keep the current politics out of it. I will not warn you again.

As far as I know, American society was really "divided" during the Nixon years, but maybe it's because I watched too much Oliver Stone movies...

Has to be Lincoln. Once he was elected half the nation seceded.
Lincoln didn’t force any state to secede. They did that to their own great discredit. Lincoln was a hero who saved the country. The South started this war and richly deserved toi be beaten.
