Australia is not a NATO member for obvious geographic reasons. It is however a NATO ally and there is much common military doctrine and equipment.

Why Brazil, China, Russia, Australia are not NATO members?
Because they are not US puppets. In case of Austria because NATO was originally and to large extend still is European organization. Somebody called it Pentagon Command in Europe, which is the best description of it's function and purpose I saw so far.

Brazil, China, Russia, Australia

Australia: because both WWI and WWII didn't influence them
Brazil: because they are so far..
Russia: because of Cold War influence..?
China: ?

And how about Japan?
OH God. This post is just embarrassing.

Asking why Russia isn't a member of NATO.

I just don't even know where to begin.

Australia = South of the Atlantic.
Brazil = South of the Atlantic.
Russia = Because its style of government, et cetera are too different from those in the West.
China = Same as for Russia. Plus, not an Atlantic country.
Japan = Not an Atlantic country.
