Was there any chance the South would surrender after Lincoln's re-election?
That, I assume, was the final event that made Union victory inevitable.

If they had stopped then, it would have made the war about 1/2 year shorter.

No, because Davis and Lee wanted to keep fighting the ACW long after it was clear that the Confederacy had no chance to win the American Civil War.
