Why has America never suffered a coup d'etat?

Multiple reasons:

1. Civilian oversight of the military (i.e. politicians make the big decisions, not generals)
2. The military is paid by the government, not by generals and officers
3. If the government is blatantly despised and incompetent it will simply be voted out in a few years
4. With a couple of exceptions (e.g. 1800-1, early 1930's) there has never been a political situation in the US where a crisis was so bad that it could lead to a coup
