Why is the Sinai so sparsely populated? I mean, the Gaza Strip next to it is overpopulated like crazy, but the Sinai itself doesn't have much of a population at all:

Mapping Population Density Across the Globe

Why is this? Why haven't millions of Egyptians settled in the coastal areas of the Sinai by now?

Also, as a side question--do you think that the Sinai would have been much more populated right now had it become a part of the British Mandate of Palestine after the end of World War I?
