Two thirds of Scotland's trade is with the rest of the UK
And? Why would it cease? English businesses trade with Scotland. Are they going to be happy that a lucrative market is closed to them?

Unlike the UK, which trades more with the world outside the EU than it does with it, and the EU is becoming less important each year to the UK for trade.
It has decreased BUT "In 2016, the EU accounted for 48% of goods exports from the UK, while goods imports from the EU were worth more than imports from the rest of the world combined" https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/internationaltrade/articles/whodoestheuktradewith/2017-02-21

And no doubt Scottish businesses will be thrilled that lucrative trade with EWNI may become more difficult.

If that was to be the case it follows that English businesses would find it more difficult to engage with Scotland. There would be a mighty outcry - from both sides of the border.

Very true but the danger is that the mighty outcry might not be listened to until too late.

It's the typical contradiction: on the one hand we get told that the UK can't leave the EU because of the trade it does with the EU, so we'd suffer economically, whilst, on the other hand, many Remainers say that Scotland should leave the UK because of Brexit, ignoring the fact that two-thirds of Scotland's trade is with the rest of the UK.

"Oh, but the rest of the UK would still want to trade with Scotland", they say, yet they don't use a similar argument when it comes to Brexit. They don't say: "Brexit will be fine because the EU will still want to trade with the UK."

So, basically, Scotland will be fine outside the UK, even though two-thirds of its trade is with the rest of the UK, yet somehow the UK will suffer outside the EU, even though the EU is declining in importance to Britain for trade.

I agree. But surely the example of the Brexit shambles will be learned and any future anglo-scottish negotiations will be more fruitful and the path more harmonious. Can only live in hope.

If it comes to pass and I hope not, you need not fear my Scottish friend we (English) are reasonable people and negotiations would be more harmonious. Have you ever paused to think of how you would extract yourself from the EU should you find that life in this organisation does not meet your aspirations for independence - bon chance mon ami, Barnier will have you for breakfast.
