Never seen it but I will definitely have to put it on the list.

I remember reading a while back about Gibson's plans for a "historical" movie set in the times of the Viking raids on the British Isles. Has anyone read anything about that recently?

Perhaps it was put on the back burner given Mel's recent "troubles."

Apparently he is directing a film with Warner Bros about Judah Macabee:

and what rights do this group have to demand that warner brothers fire him?? do they work for warner brothers?
He made some anti-Semitic comments in the past. They perceive it like you would Ahmedinejad making a film about George Washington, they don't trust he'll do history justice.

To Gibson its just publicity naturally.

I'm disappointed he's going to make that Judah Maccabee movie.
I mean, he was originally going to make a movie about Vikings, spoken in ancient norse.
The Judah M. story might be interesting, but it can't be cooler than vikings.
Even if his plan to cast Leonardo Di Caprio as a Viking was somewhat weird (Di Caprio is a great actor, but him playing a Viking warrior? That's like casting Dustin Hoffman as conan the Barbarian...)

Back on topic, I think Apocalypto was great.

I thought Apocalypto was a rather silly, pointless movie. It consisted almost entirely of the longest and arguably least interesting chase scene in the world, involving an unstoppable guy who at some point appeared to forget he'd been seriously wounded and shrugged off what should have been a number of debilitating injuries.

It should have been called 'Indestructo.'

Yes they do. They can do all the demanding they like. That's their right under the Constitution.

In all fairness, he was extremely drunk and not in a great place at the time, people say and do some really bad things when they have a break down.

Maybe he wants to make up for it by doing the film justice?

You mean like almost every other movie on earth...? I don't see that as a reason.

Apocalypto was a good action movie, the scenery, acting, and directing are well done.

As far as historical accuracy is concerned, I've read a lot of experts on Mesoamerican history rolled their eyes at the movie. Some of the problems were the fact that they blindly tossed in elements that either belonged to the Aztecs or were from various different periods of Mayan history.

Also, as far as I know, Mayan cities had been abandoned for centuries by the time the first Spaniards arrived, and the Mayans never practiced the kind of large scale, industrial human sacrifice that you saw in the movie -- those were the Aztecs. I'm not certain if I remember this right, but the particular god they were sacrificing to didn't even require human sacrifices.

I also seem to remember that the actors were speaking the wrong language, or maybe it was just a modern form of it that wasn't spoken at that time.

wow, i couldn't disagree more--you are the only person in this thread who didn't like it. the chase scene was a bit far fetched i agree but i was exciting! that's why i called jaguar paw the mayan energizer bunny in my OP... didn't rambo go thru something similar--and arnold in the terminator movies? we can't have the main star drop dead after only 1 pesky arrow!:D

When people suffer break downs it is very unpleasant, and afterwards the person feels terrible and ashamed, I don't see the point in going on and on about it because IMO he was clearly in a distressed mind set at that point in his life.

If he made the comments sober and stood by them as a belief I would think a lot less of him, but he didn't.

Everyone makes mistakes. :)

I agree, I have had experience around people who had break downs and it is horrible, the worst thing is that the person is really not themselves, so I think it must be understood the difference between someone who is in a bad place and gets drunk and someone who just wants to be an ...... :)
