Since the earliest evidence for the burning of the plant was found in Romanian kurgans dated 3,500 BCE, some scholars suggest that cannabis was first used as a psychoactive drug by Proto-Indo-Europeans during ritual ceremonies, a custom they eventually spread throughout western Eurasia during their migrations.[80][81] Descendant cognates of the root *kanna- ("cannabis") have been proposed in Sanskrit śaná, Greekkánnabis (κάνναβις), Germanic *hanipa(German Hanf, English hemp), Russian konopljá, Albanian kanëp, Armenian kanap and Old Prussian knapios.[82][83][84] Other linguists suggest that the common linguistic inheritance does not date back to the Indo-European period and contend that the word cannabislikely spread later across Eurasia as a Wanderwort ('wandering word'), ultimately borrowed into Ancient Greek and Sanskrit from a non-Indo-European language.[85][86]

In America, Native Americans did indeed have knowledge of cannabis long before the arrival of Europeans. They used it for medicinal, spiritual, and ceremonial purposes. It was valued for its therapeutic properties and its role in rituals rather than recreational use, as we might think of it today.
In Europe during the 18th century, cannabis wasn't as widely known or used compared to other regions. Its popularity grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries due to diverse cultural and historical factors.
History of cannabis
Highly doubtful in the pre Colombian era. The first recorded use of marijuana was in China but it was also well known in what is now modern India. Marijuana was legal in the US until the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act and became quais legal in various states starting with California by the 1990s.

There isn't a lot of concrete evidence directly linking pre-Columbian Native Americans to cannabis use, as most historical records come from European explorers and later sources. Except as far as we know the cannabis plant originated in Central Asia approx 11170 BC . Its highly unlikely it was known to American Indians in the pre Colombian era.
