The terrorist attacks of 11SEP2001 for me. It set up the next two decades, and continues to influence US policy. The decade between 2000 and 2010 can be understood as a conflict between government power to provide security and the right of the populace for privacy and the adherence to the ideal of due process of law. That conflict, as important as it is, has not yet been satisfactorily resolved.

The subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq would not have occurred but for 9/11. Those invasions at one hand reaffirmed the supremacy of the West in conventional warfare, but exposed the weakness of existing counterinsurgency tactics. From here on, it is reasonable to believe any invasion will be accompanied by a counterinsurgency period, which may extend for a decade or more.

The last decade was just invasion after invasion in the Middle East...

'ought to be nicknamed "The Decade of the Middle East" (or something more catchy :D)

The world lacks any really important historical event since 2000. 9/11? Well, that was a terrorist attack, it killed some people, scared a lot of people and changed usa policy, but that's it.

Wait until something really important happens. Like WW3!

I voted 9/11 even though we cannot know which event has truly the most effect say, 20 or 50 years from now.

9/11 is the best bet........ from a Western Perspective.

Well, considering the dimension and the characteristics of the event and the consequences of it, my choice can be only 9/11.

Other events deserve a thought; for example the "Start of the use of the EURO (2002)" which anyway has changed the monetary equilibrium at global level [not a little matter], but in my opinion 9/11 has started an entire season [not ended yet] of changes and conflicts which is affecting the entire world.

I voted for the financial crunch of 2008, which started a series of events still ongoing, like the current Euro crisis, and which impact is still felt, with unforeseen consequences.

9/11 was a major event of course, but I tend to regard economic reasons as the greatest movers of history.

9/11 is for me the most important event since the year 2000, since what happened on that day has had a huge impact on current events.

depressions come and go in history and terrorist attacks are not uncommon either... sure this one was bad but is it such a special thing in history? not really if you ask me

It's a bit more then just a bad terrorist attack,it was horrendous, and caused a lot more to follow with the war on terror etc so the 'ripple effect' it created is very important in history.

It was one of those moments where you still remember what you were doing at the moment you heard about it - that doesnt happen with many events.
