Hi, does anybody know, how did Notre Dame look like in 1792? Was it possible to enter the cathedral or was it guarded? Did people use it for food storage only or also for example for meetings? Were there any catholic symbols left? Was it possible to pray there or it would be almost a suicide? And what about an only bell left, Emmanuel, did it ring or not?
Thank U for answering any of my questions above!

Until the National Convention (1792-1795) the liberty of cult was garanteed. But with the invasion of autumn and the campaigns of 1793-1794,in Vendea and at the fronteers, the popular dictature proclamed "the patrie in danger" and occupied the churches. The churches of Notre Dame,Pantheon and St Andrew of Arts were occupied by the volunteers of the two battalions:"french theater" and "volunteers of Pantheon".The reserves of flour of the troops were stocked in Notre Dame. And after a big part of the archives of the parisian justice (Chatelet s tribunal).
Transformed in "shrine of the reason" the cult was stopped and the works of demolition ordered:
Destruction of the old dart (XIIIth century).
Destruction of the statues of the kings. The heads were cut and recuperated by a teacher who dissimulated them in his garden.
The badges of the Ancient Regime were hammered by the team of the sculptor Daujon.

I remember that for the preparation of Normale Superieure (Saint Cloud) all the teachers recommanded:
"The catholic church and the revolution" (1947) by Andre Latreille.Excellent.
My family, calvinist, has fought against the marshall Wallenstein in Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). He became catholic,a real tragedy for us...
