In your opinion

I chose Paul McCartney.... highly talented without the ego, someone who genuinely cares about people.

John Lennon seemed to me to be someone who liked doing things to be controversial just to do it.

If I wanted to go to the pub and could choose one to have a beer with, it would always be Paul, even if they were all still alive.

Even Pete Best was a better musician than he was
Musicians?:lol::lol:

Not a one of them is/ was a musician. I think Paul is the only one that knew more than three chords. :zany: Lyricists, yah...musicians :)weird:)...give me a break.

I'm quite partial to our own 'Beetle' actually - a username derived perhaps from the fab quartet??

:) Naw, it's derived from Kafka. When I had to choose a nic, it occurred to me that going online and doing the forum thing might be sort of like a metamorphosis for myself.:) So far my fav thread in Historum was the one about people in societies and cultures who eat insects. When I visited that thread, someone mentioned he'd be happy to gobble me down. And he used the former smile icon with all the teeth. I had to let him know I wasn't the little-type beetle, but the human-size Kafka one. He'd need more teeth.:) BTW, I do indeed appreciate the "partial". And I do have a partiality for that person of the land from whence came that wonderful movie about a band, The Commitments. What a great movie. And the actors were locals. Unforgettable.

I'm also glad someone used the reference "fab" in regard to the Beatles. That became their nic. In the US they were called "the Fab Four."

--------------------

In regard to the Beatles, whom I think are an endlessly fascinating topic in regard to music (ahem, I guess if you haven't noticed), they emerged as a phenomenon from among a group of budding Brit bands of the time. However, like many bands, they actually had to grind out an existence in small, distant venues before they made the big time. And in truth, it seems, their early songs may not have been that original. They were pop hits. However, by the late 60s their music became very original. A Day in the Life, as mentioned by earlier posters, is an extraordinary song.

As I stated earlier, I think Lennon was the one who made the Beatles unique. Perhaps if it were up to McCartney, they may have continued to play pop tunes.

The above stated, I'm interested to know from those who voted for Lennon exactly why you like him best. Was he really a more talented musician, or perhaps more creative in musical composition or perhaps subjects of songs or off-the-path lyrics? I guess I'm asking why you voted for him. I don't consider him more talented than someone perhaps like Clapton or many others. How original was he in regard to perhaps the Doors? I'm just wondering. I'm not trying to dismiss his impact or influence, as I've previously stated twice I think he's the person who made the Beatles unique.

They played great only when all they were known as the members of the Beatles.

I voted Paul for several reasons. Paul didn't get swept up in the counter culture like John and George did. He didn't become a junkie like John.
John was the more gifted songwriter and lyricist but it seems he lived the classic tortured artists life. Depression, addiction, abuse of those that loved him. He dumped his first wife and cheated on Yoko with Yoko in the next room.
McCartney married a woman who already had a child and raised that child as his own. He stayed with his wife till she died.
Of the Beatles John and George seemed to have wanted to be something other than the greatest band in the world after they achieved it. George wanted to be a saint and John a crusader. McCartney just wanted to write great songs.
I love Lennon's wit but I respect McCartney the man.

He didn't become a junkie? If you knew anything about Paul you'd know he was a big user of marajuana and LSD. Still is as far as I know. One thing I don't like about Paul is that he's kind of sold out in the last few years. Appearing on the X factor? That's pretty much spitting on the creativity he and John created. Also, it sickens me that he's still able to tour and play the songs he wrote thirty years ago and still make it sound exciting. It's not.

Sold out? Not exciting?

Paul McCartney plays Beatles hits AND Wings hits AND his own compositions beyond. He's more than just the Beatles, songs from Band On The Run to Ebony and Ivory to Mull Of Kintyre to Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey and more. I still thoroughly enjoy his music, and if he wants to appear on "X Factor" to represent the very few true great older musicians we have left, more power to him!!! He should after the utter insanity he put up with during the Mills years.

Speaking of Mills:
In a remote South African gold mine, a miner was setting dynamite to blast a seam when it exploded taking one of his legs clean off. As he was stretchered out, he was heard to sob "What will happen to me? Who's ever going to want to marry a one legged gold digger?" Then his mobile phone rings..."Hello? Oh, Paul McCartney...what an honour..."

That would be me, and this old thread was "Bugs, anyone?"

I had some good laughs there, thanks for reminding me. The former 'grin' emoticon was indeed sort of threatening, like a Halloween's pumpkin smile. I had no intention to insinuate a threat, but my grinning came out as such. :)

"The Commitments" is one of my favourite films too, great music, good story, fresh cast.

And I do share your partiality towards the emerald island of our own General. ;)

Lennon was addicted to Heroin. Both he and Yoko have come and publicly stated it. It's not hard to find the information. The song "Cold Turkey" is about his attempt to withdraw. As for LSD that was George's trip. He stated he was an agnostic prior to taking LSD but began to study eastern religion because of "revelations" he found while on LSD. All the Beatles tried it, McCartney as well. As for Pot that doesn't even belong in the same category as Heroin or Cocaine as far as i'm concerned. If you think differently that is your opinion.
Appearing on the xfactor, How is that different than appearing on the Ed Sullivan show? Lennon hosted the Merv Griffen show for a week. I don't think that makes him a sell out, but to each his own. I have several Lennon songs on my Ipod and listen to more Lennon than McCartney, but if I were to live either of their lives or have a son emulate them it would be McCartney.

George Harrison was always my favourite Beatle (and I love his "My Sweet Lord") and Lennon's "All my loving" the song I most often sang in my early teens.

I could not decide between John Lennon and George Harrison. They both contributed so much in the world other than just music.

I picked Harrison just because of The Concert for Bangladesh. That was the bomb. That was whack. That was the Whack Bomb.

I voted George because out of the three talented ones he seemed to have the smallest chip on his shoulder.
He is also the only one to produce anything decent (apart from 'the frog chorus'):D since the band split. Lennons stuff is mawkish, overly sentimental hypocrisy and McCartneys stuff is bland populist rubbish.

I heard a story where someone was complaining about Ringos lack of talent and said to Paul " It's not as if he's the best drummer in the world, is it?" To which Paul replied "He's not even the best drummer in the band!"

Favourite Beatles tune? Probably this one; Hey Bulldog from the Yellow Submarine album.

How could you Davidius? Ringo was a musical genius, granted he wasn't much of a drummer but could you see John, Paul or George composing the like of this

According to the internet Paul McCartney wrote that song.

And don't get me started on Rod bloody Stewart! The Faces were a class act but 'rip off' Rod just brings on the red mist!

Hang on, you've changed the video to Octopusses Garden, I quite like that one.

The power of the edit button. Being a technological flop I must have copied the Faces one twice as I pasted it on another musical thread. Realised by mistake and rectified it after you posted. Sorry about that I must be getting quite a reputation for posting songs in the wrong place. A combination of senility and stupidity. The Faces were a class act before Rod decided to go it alone.
