I think the bombing of peaceful cities is a more barbaric method than what Krum Khan did

Well, since balkan threads automatically land in controversial history, I would venture a guess that I'm afraid it was just a lack of access to such weapons. Pretty sure he would have bombed the hell out of Constantinople to settle the account of having Pliska totally destroyed by them.

I stumbled today upon a piece of chess history:


The earliest chesspieces from India (the birthplace of chess) were called shah (king), wazir (counsellor), fil (bishop), asp (knight), rukh (rook), and piyade (pawn). The earliest Persian names were shah, farzin, pil, asp, rukh, and piyada.

Now the name of the founder of the First Bulgarian Empire was Asparukh. Which could mean either his father was an avid chess player, or the Bulgars used to have the same military ranks as the inventors of chess.

I'm not sure how the turkic names of chess pieces are, but I would dare to guess they might be a little different.
